I know, I believed me too.

Just when I had promised to start writing more, I disappear again. Well all I can really say is that I apologize to any of my loyal readers out there. I have lots of things to say, but not much time to say it. Well, maybe it's not that time, that I am lacking, but the will. There has been some major changes in my life since you last heard from me and I have had to do a lot of soul searching, trying to find out exactly who I am. It hasn't been easy or fun. But I have had to do it. Hopefully, a better me will come out of it.
Enough of the pity party. There is lots of things I would love to talk about and hopefully I will be able to post it here. There is some news on the upcoming Memory Championships. Maybe another CD review or two. A review of "Dog Sees God" which I saw a couple weeks ago. And you can find out about a "new" show that I have become increasingly obsessed with. Unfortunately, I am way too busy at work today to take a nice chunk of time and write about anyone topic, so I guess this will have to do.
Till next time, remember to smile.

Making Music

One more quick post before I shut it down for the day:

I have found this really cool program that allows you to create your own music with you having to have lots of knowledge about making music. It is as easy as coloring in a picture. Check out this website, it has the program as well as a community where you can share your music and look for tips on making your music even better. You can download others songs and make your own remix using the program.
The program I am talking about is HyperScore.

Lights and Sounds

I am currently in the 2nd listening of Yellowcard's new album "Lights and Sounds", however I thought could start writing about it and perhaps go into detailed track analysis later. I could just always go back and edit this post if I feel something has changed my opinion of the album. I also must let you know that the copy of this album I have has a corrupted first track and a missing sixth track so it isn't a full review. Now, all that being said, onto the review.

Yellowcard has come a long way from their roots. From a band that used to play free lunchtime shows at high schools while it was on the road to a band that fills venues and makes platinum records. Of course many things have changed. Founding member and lead guitarist Ben Harper was kicked out of the band this past year. Vocalist/lyricist/rythmn guitarist Ryan Key wasn't even a member of the band when they released their first CD. Violinist/Back-up Vocalist Sean Macklin and Drummer LP are the only remaining original members of this band. I think all the shake-ups have left this band without a real identity. Or perhaps they have an identity just one that is different from the Yellowcard identity I have become familiar with over their last three releases.
Lights and Sounds kicks off with a ballad sounding track with full orchestral accompanyment however I can only hear parts of it and it is all distorted so I will have to get back to it later when I get a better copy of this album. The second track is the title track and first single. It leads off with a heavy guitar riff and jumps into a fast paced rock blitz. Solid track but it doesn't really sound like Yellowcard. The third track "Down on My Head" is a slower more melodic song. This track really highlights one of my major issues with this album. There is a serious lack of emotion in the vocals. It feels as if Ryan Key is just reading off a page as he sails through very forgetable song. The fourth track "Sure Thing Falling" is very similar to "Lights and Sounds" as it is very rockin and heavily guitar driven. The fifth track "City of Devils" is a softer song that again lacks the emotion needed to carry a softer song. I don't have the sixth track so I can't comment on it. Track seven could very easily have been done by a different band as it sounds nothing like Yellowcard has ever done before. The guitar plods along and drags the song down lacking hooks and creativity. The 8th and 9th tracks are a nice break from the rest of the album. Clever guitar riffs and technical drum work shine through in these two tracks that I greatly enjoyed, Track 9 "Martin Sheen or JFK" shines out as my favorite song on the album. Unfortunetly, this doesn't say much. Alright, I think the track by track analysis is done here.
The main problem with the album, besides the lack of emotion is that many of the songs just don't stand out. The ballads don't carry that emotion or lyrical brilliance needed to make them stick. The songs that are more rocking generally are easier on the ears however many of them riffs are uncreative and very reminiscent of other bands in the pop-punk genre. I never felt that Yellowcard was a band that would put out creative and earth-shattering music, but with their past releases I always felt like they poured their heart into the work. This release seems very mechanical and over-produced. The thing is that this is the kind of album that has the potential to sell lots of copies. I mean a real lot. I can see this album easily going platinum. It has a lot of elements that play well on the radio now-a-days. Simple lyrics, quick and simple guitar riffs with some fun orchestral breakdowns and easy sing-a-long choruses.
After reading this review one might expect that I hate this album. That is far from the truth. I find "Lights and Sounds" to be a decent album. However, unlike their past releases, I can very easily see this CD finding it's way to the back of my CD binder within two to three weeks.

Pros: Excellent Drum Work, LP never lets me down.
Great album to just pop in and listen to mindlessly while doing something else that will grab your attention.

Cons: Not much creativity
Lacking emotion, especially in the vocal department
Violin not prominent in most of the songs

Tracks to Download: Martin Sheen or JFK, Holly Wood Died, Lights and Sounds

Overall: 6 out of 10

Star Trek meets Howard Stern, Sirius-ly

How about that for a headline title. So corny I know.
Anyway, what happened Monday over the satellite airwaves could be turn out to the start of a revolution and based on news reports, it certainly looks like it is, in fact, a revolution. At 6:00 AM a remixed version of 2001: A Space Odyssey was aired on Howard 100, one of two new Howard Stern-based channels on Sirius satellite radio. The remix was simply the original track with farts dubbed in. At that point the new announcer of the Howard Stern show proudly boomed through my headphones, none other than Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei (it rhymes with okay). The first morning was riddled with technical difficulties but that did not detract from the monumental first show.
After three days it is obvious that Stern and his crew are extremely happy at their new home in space. The shows have moved quickly with minimal commercial breaks and it is obvious that the Howard Stern show has picked up right it left off.
Many questioned whether or not satellite radio would survive. Paying for radio? Blasphemy! Well, people thought that cable TV would never take off when network TV could be had for free. Will satellite radio take off and become the standard that cable has become? No one can be really sure but Monday definitely swung the pendulum towards the "yes" side of the debate. Sirius Satellite radio has had over 3 million subscriptions since November and that number is increasing daily, as some estimated that over 400,000 people tried to activate thier Sirius service on Sunday and Monday before Howard's first show. Who knows what will happen in 5 years once Howard's contract runs out but for now satellite radio seems to be the wave of the future.

Quick Updates

Good morning everyone. Quick update here. I am currently listening to third Howard Stern show on Sirius Satillite Radio. I have listened to the first two shows and am going to throw some commentary about that once I finish listening to this show. I have also obtained a copy of the new Yellowcard CD "Lights and Sounds". I have given that one listen and am going to give it another listen or two and then put up a CD Review of that. I am going to see "Dog Sees God" tonight in New York City and tomorrow night I will be seeing Woody Allen's new movie "Match Point" and will try and get a review up of those. I want to do a couple more CD reviews in the upcoming days.
So stay tuned.

What is Going On?

It is kind of depressing how long it's been since I have been posting in here. Almost two months. How things have changed. I wanted to make a quick post while I am at work just to say hello. I am hoping to be posting more often. School starts up again next week for me so I will definitely have Wednesdays off so I should be posting at the very least once a week. And I hope to post a couple more times during the week. Getting back to the Top Ten Thursdays is another goal for this blog so look forward to some more new stuff coming.
